Supreme Court Blocks Deportation of Illegal Immigrants In Texas
Early this morning, the Supreme Court issued a ruling blocking the deportation of Venezuelans in North Texas under Alien Enemies Act of 1798, a law that is rarely utilized.
The Court instructed the Trump Administration to withhold from deporting Venezuelans (who are believed to be gang members), being held at the Bluebonnet Detention Center in Anson, Texas until further notice.
The order released by SCOTUS stated, “The government is directed not to remove any member of the putative class of detainees from the United States until further order of this court,”
Only two conservative justices, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, disagreed with the Supreme Court decision.
The Supreme Court acted due to an emergency appeal from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) contending that immigration authorities appeared to be moving to restart removals under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798.
The ACLU released the following statement after the Supreme Court's decision:
“We are deeply relieved that the Court has temporarily blocked the removals. These individuals were in imminent danger of spending the rest of their lives in a brutal Salvadoran prison without ever having had any due process.”
